The Sunken Temple

For many years, the fisherman and merchants of Atlea made offerings to the god of the sea in a small temple along the shore. In return, the fishermen’s nets were full, and the merchants returned safely with wonders from distant lands. As Atlea prospered and grew, so did their avarice and excess. Soon, the old ways and the old gods were forgotten.

One day a threat emerged from the east… powerful raiders from across the sea. Only then did the people of Atlea call out for the god of the sea, begging once more for his protection. He heard their pleas and appeared before them. He told the people of Atlea that their greed had brought about their impending doom. He said he would protect the returned to the old ways and cast their gold into the sea. The people of Atlea accused the god of the sea of seeking to steal their wealth. This angered the god. The sea boiled with his fury and the old temple slipped beneath the waves. The people were left to their demise; the sea raiders from the east fell upon them like hungry dogs. Atlea was no more.

In time, people would once again live along the shore and fish in its waters. The old fishermen tell the tale of the sunken temple. Though rumors persist of treasures that might lie in the depths, they avoid the temple. They fear the wrath of the god of the sea and the denizens of the deep are said to protect it still.
